What "Intention" Means to Me

Are you a “goal setter”? Or, maybe a “planner”? Or, maybe these are two things that you think about doing but just don’t really know how to start the process. ⁣

I have always been a “planner”. For those of you who know me well, you know this truth and know that at times it can be a bit “extreme”. Back in the day, I even made a career out of it! At times, my “planner personality” has actually gotten me in trouble because I have such high expectations and when the “plan” does not go the way I envision it, I get let down. ⁣

A few years ago when sitting down to write down my “goals”, I decided to change the word to “intention”. Why? Because when I think of the word “goal” I think of one thing that I just have to hit or reach at the end of a specific period of time. When I think of the word “intention” I stay a little bit more present to the here and now. When I think of the word “intention” I am more in tuned with my minute by minute actions. ⁣

I love the following definition of intention - “An intention is idea that you plan (or intend) to carry out. If you mean something, it's an intention. Your goal, purpose, or aim is your intention. It's something you mean to do, whether you pull it off or not.”

This morning I woke up with an intention to become become centered. To me, becoming centered is a feeling of peace and groundedness. I know that if I start my day with mindfulness and movement I can find some peace and groundeness by linking breath to movement by way of yoga poses. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to teach to an amazing group of open minded co-workers that gathered together with different intentions for their day. I am blessed to know that we have common interests, but our “whys” and what fuels us are all different. ⁣

I encourage you to take a moment today to set an intention for your day. This intention might stay with you throughout the entire month of October or maybe even through the remainder of the year. Come back to your intention time and time again. And know that if you don’t “pull it off” it is on because you moved through the moments with integrity because your intention was in your heart.
